Hi, my name is Connor and I am a 20 year old piper from Crieff, Perthshire. I have been playing pipes for 15 years and play quite a few other instruments such as Whistle, Guitar, Piano, Mandolin and more recently the Flute.
When I was 11, I gained a place at the City of Edinburgh Music School where I studied Piano and Bagpipes. I now study Music at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
I started learning chanter at the age of 5 progressing to a full size set of highland bagpipes when I was 7. By the time I was 8, I started going to the National Piping Centre in Glasgow, where I began taking lessons from the wonderfully talented piper Margaret Dunn to whom I continue to take my tuition from. I had great success in the juniors and progressed to the adult solo competitions at the age of 16. In the last couple of years I have won many prizes including the Competing Pipers C grade League table and been runner up in the B Grade. I have won the overall B Grade at The Society of London Piping Competition and have won the Silver Medal Competition at the Northern Meeting. My present grading is B+ for Light Music and A for Piobaireachd.
I have been former First Minister, Alex Salmond’s Personal piper since I was 8, and this has given me lots of great opportunities such as playing at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for Mr Alex Salmond.
I joined the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland in 2009. Through being involved with this project I developed my band skills and forged friendships with like minded pipers and drummers from all over the country. The National Youth Band is a non-competing performance band who play a mixture of modern and more traditional music. We not only have enjoyed performing in all of the biggest venues around Scotland but are given the opportunity to travel to out lying areas of the country, holding workshops and performing concerts to take our skills and ideas to a wider audience. In 2012 I was selected to tour China with The National Youth Pipe Band and The Royal National Scottish Orchestra. This was a fantastic experience in that we played all the biggest venues in the major cities of China. I have also travelled to Switzerland on two occasions to take part in the Basil Tattoo.
I am entering my third season competing with Field Marshall Montgomery Pipe Band in the competing band arena. I have won 7 Major championships in two years, including being Scottish Champion, British champion on two occasions, UK champion on three occasions, European Champion, and being a Grade 1 World Pipe Band Champion on two occasions, firstly in 2014 and now more recently 2016.
I recently recorded whistle with Gnoss on their debut album which came out on the 15th of January, at their album launch at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections. There I played whistle and Mandolin.
